Second-Generation Chauffeurs Sheppard & Guzzardi Share Speedway Gold
Parrow sprints to 5th win, Grant & Smith top stock car fields as Darling dominates Novice
Canandaigua, NY – July 12, 2025 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR
Land Of Legends Raceway provided another ‘Saturday Spectacular’ with two more drivers scoring memorable feature wins as summer rolled on at the historic Ontario Co. Fairgrounds oval.
Geneva Club Beverage and Ferris Mowers presented Pepsi Family Autograph Night at the speedway and those fans collecting signatures from Stirling Lubricants Sportsman winner Tyler Guzzardi and Lloyd's Contracting Hobby Stock victor Blane Smith were among the luckiest as each driver triumphed for the first time in 2025. It was the first career win in Canandaigua for the sophomore Sportsman racer while the veteran stock car pilot snapped a 12-year dry spell after taking his first checkered flag at the fairgrounds in 1989.
Meanwhile, Matt Sheppard returned to his winning ways in the Pepsi Big-Block Modified feature as did Bobby Parrow (MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car), Jimmy Grant (Auto Value Parts Stores Street Stock) and Chris Darling (Hutchinson Property Preservation New Legends Sportsman) to bring down the curtain on another hot summer showdown in the Finger Lakes.
In one of the most popular events held annually at the speedway, hundreds of fans met up with their favorite drivers alongside their race cars parked 3-wide in the fairgrounds midway outside turn four behind the main grandstands, gathering hero cards and posing for pictures during the meet and greet activities. LOLR public address announcer Steve Ovens conducted candid one-on-one interviews with many of the racers in all classes before qualifiers took the first green flag.
Future LOLR Wall of Famer and current Race Director Greg Hixson added to the evening fanfare, climbing behind the wheel of Bruce Batzel’s black no. 57 Batzel’s Automotive & Hot Rods-Speed Connection/Bicknell Sportsman ride for not only warm-ups around his old stomping grounds but a qualifying heat and feature go in which he finished sixth despite suffering engine issues with just two laps left. While Greg raced, son Scott Hixson was relieved of his Chief Flagman duties on the starter’s stand by 25 year-old Nolan Crowley from nearby Shortsville, himself a past head flagger for a pair of ISMA events at Watkins Glen International, and Scott filled in for his father directing trackside traffic in the tower.
The 30-lap Big-Block finale needed just two times around the fast half-miler to ultimately determine the race winner. Sheppard bolted from fifth on the starting grid to second on the opening circuit then disposed of outside pole-sitter James Sweeting the second time around to forge what resulted in the final lead of the race.
“Getting to victory lane has been a struggle lately, especially here,” stated Sheppard, who celebrated his 43rd birthday Saturday in the DAV’s winner circle following his second victory of the ‘25 campaign. It was the 9-time track champion’s 95th career Big-Block triumph at the fairgrounds, elevating the Waterloo star to third past hometown mentor Steve Paine (94) and now ranking behind only Alan Johhnson (129) and Bob McCreadie (99) on Canandaigua’s all-time win list.
“Struggled a lot here this year but the track was a little different tonight and I caught some really good breaks early. Everything just kinda fell into our place tonight and we were able to hold off the #6 car (Mat Williamson) for 30 laps,” remarked Sheppard after ending Williamson’s string of three straight wins to collect the $100 Prouty's Bar & Grill Bounty.
Sweeting drove around front row partner Derrick Podsiadlo on the opening circuit while Sheppard took advantage when third-place starter Dylan Zacharias bounced off the inside turn four berm and ricocheted across the track. ‘Super Matt’ instantly filled the gap and was even quicker to mirror the move next time around when Sweeting slid high navigating through the fourth corner to relinquish the point.
From there the no. 9S Hurlock Auto & Speed-Westmoreland Golf Club/Bicknell mount rushed out to a full straightaway lead with only one yellow flag falling to impede his effort. Turn four contact with Kasey Coffey stopped Dalton Slack in his tracks on lap 10 to provide Sheppard’s closest competition a brief period of caution.
Back under green Sheppard was chased by an all-star cast of Erick Rudolph, Alex Payne, Justin Haers and Williamson, with Sweeting remaining mixed in between. ‘Money Mat’ moved into fourth by lap 20 as the front-runners were evenly spaced around the track and continued his rally through traffic, overtaking Haers for third on lap 23 before edging runner-up Rudolph across the line to complete lap 25.
With Sheppard stymied behind Kasey Coffey in the closing stages, Williamson was able to close to within five car-lengths under the checkers, settling for his third second-place finish alongside six wins to stay well ahead in the point standings. Rudolph, Haers and Payne filled out the final front-five.
“I tried not to pay too much attention (leader board) and just concentrate on my line,” noted Sheppard, now with a dozen feature wins on the Northeast DIRTcar circuit. “Felt like I wasn’t rolling too bad there then I caught Kasey and he was kinda giving me fits a little bit. He was running the same line I was and kinda held me up there. Was just happy to be able to get clear of him the last lap and bring this thing home for a win.”
“The track kinda played into my favor. I caught some big breaks there in the beginning and was able to get up there (lead) pretty quick. At that point you just want to concentrate on hitting your marks the best you can and not giving up speed. A great weekend for us, now three (wins) in a row. They’re tough to come by sometimes so we’ll take ‘em,” added Sheppard, who also scored lucrative wins at Outlaw Speedway in Dundee mid-week and Friday night at Utica-Rome Speedway.
In contrast to Sheppard bolstering his monumental win count in Canandaigua, Guzzardi became the 135th Sportsman driver to grace DAV Victory Lane since the class debuted in 1987. However, 20 year-old Tyler is now the second Guzzardi to take a checkered flag as father Beamer won his lone Pro Stock feature at LOLR in July of 2004, one of 33 DIRT-sanctioned victories with the rest logged at Genesee Speedway in Batavia where he was a three-time PS track champ in the early 2000s.
“This is awesome, my first win in pretty much my second full season here,” beamed Guzzardi, whose only other Sportsman win came in 2023 at Genesee. “Been struggling a lot. Last week we had a really bad run but it feels really good to finally get one done here. Gotta thank everyone that got me here, my dad especially, he works harder than anyone else.”
Front row starters Dylan Woodworth and Nick Galusha paced the 24-car field with division rookie Woodworth leading the first laps of his blossoming career. Guzzardi filed into sixth on the grid to begin the 25-lapper and the Mt. Morris mainstay needed only three laps to wheel his no. 7G Mark Sundt Racing-Beamer's Sales & Service-MJN Farms/Bicknell machine into the second-place slot.
When turn four contact between open-wheel veteran Kevin Ridley and weekly runner Tim Baker forced out the first of two yellow flags, Guzzardi was in position to pounce as he overtook Woodworth on the ensuing lap nine restart. Making his first start at LOLR, young Steve Roberts looped his car in turn four to incur the second and final caution and give Guzzardi a brief breather before the final stretch run.
Despite slipping off line twice over the last 15 laps that clicked off non-stop, Guzzardi did not disappoint as he cemented victory by a solid half-straightaway over Frank Guererri Jr., the Seneca Falls hotshoe still in search of his first win of the season. Nick Ventura and top-four division point leaders Richard Murtaugh III (2nd), Matt Guererri (4th), Tyler Corcoran (1st) and Karl Comfort (3rd) crossed the line next followed by upstart Evan Nugent.
“Had no clue (lead size) really, was just hoping I didn’t mess up,” admitted Guzzardi, who joins 9th-place race finisher Justin Liechti among first-time Sportsman winners in ‘25. The win is just his second top-five finish in nine events and vaults him into ninth on the points chart where he placed 19th last year qualifying for 10 shows.
“Went over the bank a couple times, got close in turn two, just kept getting more and more nervous. Kept (car) straight and kept going. Didn’t know what I was doing there, before I knew it the right-rear was over the bank and I’m like ‘I gotta stay in it,’” added Guzzardi, recalling his late race mindset.
Starting further back than both Sheppard and Guzzardi in the 20-lap 305 Sprint Car A-Main, the result was still the same for defending track champion and current points leader Parrow as the Waterloo warrior posted his fifth win in nine starts this season.
“Just trying to hold my line. Once I found the top, especially through (turns) one and two, it was wide open,” declared Parrow, who charged from eighth to take first from race-long leader Randy Years on a lap 11 restart and cruise home for another convincing win at his Saturday night hangout. “Got a helluva car builder in Doug Shaw and my guys work so hard. We work on (car) just about every single night.”
Years shared the front row with still winless Steve Glover followed by local favorite Ethan Gray and Spencer Burley aboard Glover’s back-up gold #121x Elab Smoker’s Boutique ride. When Hixson’s initial green flag unfurled it was Years drawing first blood as he sped out to an immediate lead.
Glover and Gray twice swapped second in a heated battle early on with Parrow cracking the top-five by lap eight to join the action up front. Parrow grabbed third on lap nine and improved to second the next circuit, setting his sights on the lead when Cameron Moss’ night came to an end with mechanical woes on lap 11; the same time Glover ducked pitside with his first-string red no. 121 sprinter.
The lap 11 restart was right in Parrow’s wheelhouse as he blasted by Years rounding turns one and two, winging it the rest of the way aboard his potent #80 Young Agency-Seneca Meadows-Proctor Enterprises-Waterloo Auto/Shaw mount
for career 305 win number 17, with one more victory registered at LOLR in Empire Super Sprint competition.
“Didn’t even know where I was until that caution came out,” divulged Parrow, now holding a commanding lead, 496-394, over Lance Dusett in the season-long points chase. “Then I saw Randy in front of me. Didn’t know if he was leading or not, so it was good to get by him.”
The 20-lap Street Stock feature kicked off the main event menu with outside temperatures still hovering in the mid-80s as the sun began to set. Despite running only three events at the fairgrounds so far this season, Grant reamined among the hottest, now with a pair of wins and fourth-place showing in the record book.
“Nice to claim the Prouty’s Bounty, it’s usually on me,” boasted Grant, who won six straight features en route to the ‘23 track championship before repeating his title run last season. The 31st career Street Stock win at LOLR for the Penn Yan pilot prevented five-time runner-up Rick Crego from notching his first at the vaunted fairgrounds oval.
“Knew I wasn’t going to get (Crego) off the bottom unless I was gonna move him and I’d get second before I did that. Threw a ‘Hail Mary,’ kinda just rolled around there in (turns) one and two and it worked. And I knew if Ii could get back to the bottom I pretty much had it sewed up,” Grant figured.
Long-time LOLR regular Pat Hobbs led the opening circuit before double-duty driver Marc Minutolo went around high between turns three and four to secure the point. Seventh starting Grant was already third by lap five and watched as Crego overtook Minutolo for the lead on lap nine.
Grant edged Minutolo for second at the halfway mark with all-time track full-fender win leader Mike Welch and division points leader C.J. Guererri trailing further back. The lead pair crossed the line even on lap 15 and after testing the high line down the front chute, Grant finally maneuvered past Crego on lap 18 at the same time Guererri stole fourth from Welch.
From there Grant had his #36 Geneva Glass-Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating-JE Marine Chevrolet dialed in on the moody half-miler, opening up a comfortable 10 car-length advantage under the checkered flag. Crego trailed in second for yet another Saturday while Minutolo, Guererri and Welch came next.
“Didn’t really notice the slower car (ahead of Crego),” added Grant, describing the late race pass. “I had a plan in my head the lap before. I’d get such a good run on him then would have to shut it down before I got into him and I didn’t want to get into him. But he’s got one (win) coming,”
Maybe the most popular win of the night was earned by full-fender fighter Smith, who not only returned to the winner’s circle after a dozen seasons, it was 36 years since the Gorham racer first entered victory lane in Canandaigua.
“It’s crazy when you’re up (front) like that, so many fast cars in this field,” said Smith, now 53 and winner in Rookie, Novice, Pure Stock and Street Stock divisions at LOLR since his debut as a teenager in the late 1980s. “I was waiting for them to drive around outside but the track right in the center was really good. My car was not kicking out on me like it usually does and the (track) wasn’t so slick tonight which is fine. I was just driving my ass off!”
Joining young Tyler Burnell on the front row to begin the 15-lap Hobby main, Smith out-dragged the pole winner and set a torrid pace steering his #55B Proctor Enterprises-Tradition Ford-Smith Drywall Chevrolet Monte Carlo. William Bradley had a forgettable night, slowing down the back chute on lap six then looping in turn four on lap seven to incur consecutive cautions, with Smith and Jared Hill exchanging the lead on both occasions.
Hill went by high in turns one and two on the lap six restart before Smith mirrored the outside move between turns three and four to force what amounted to the final lead change back under green on lap seven. Smith seemed to have the race in hand yet when Isaiah Murphy’s mount came to a stop down low shy of turn four on lap 12, the lead suddenly evaporated giving hard-charging Danny Kerrick one final chance.
Yet that was as close as Kerrick would get as Smith pulled away for a commanding 10 car-length victory, his 37th stock car win since September of 1989. Tenth-place starter Kerrick settled for second ahead of Hill, Frank Burnell Jr. and points leader Marc Minutolo, who leads Burnell, 438-432, in the closest track points race.
“Wish I had the other leg to be able to brake, it’s a pain in the ass with one foot going back and forth,” smiled Smith, who at age 14 lost his left leg above the knee in an accident at his grandfather’s farm on Christmas Eve ‘85, soonafter given the nickname ‘One-legged Bandit’ for his trackside prowess. “Have to thank all the guys that have been around since day one. Built this car with Ron Merithew in 2007 and Mike Mastin has been my motor man forever. We’ve had a lot of help.”
The 12-lap New Legends finale ended the same way as three others before it this season, with talented teenager Darling topping the novice Sportsman race in decisive fashion wheeling his beautiful blue no. 714 Speed Connection-Sunrise Insulation-Van Bortel Trucking-Bilstein Shocks/Bicknell entry.
“The track slicked up a lot from the heat to the feature,” reflected Darling, who started his racing career at age 5 as a member of the Syracuse Microd Club, now with four wins in seven starts to top this entry level open-wheel division. “Got a lot of grip in turns one and two and three and four for a couple laps. Just couldn’t figure it out. Decided on the top so just ran up there the entire race.”
Brianna Murtaugh advanced from the third to second on the last lap after contact with Mitchell Hyde crossing the line under the checkers while Evan Gray and first-time driver Matt Jordan finished next. Gray’s car was found to be underweight in the customary post-race inspection and his subsequent disqualification officially moved Mark Sundt into the top-five on the final scoresheet.
