Comfort Captures First Career Sportsman Series Checkers In Canandaigia

Payne & Craun claim 1st wins of season while Welch, Smith & Darling repeat at LOLR

Canandaigua, NY – July 19, 2025 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR

Superior Blue Propane and Disbatch Brewing Company presented ‘Pack the Track Pink Night’ at Land Of Legends Raceway and it was Karl Comfort putting on a colorful driving display as he captured the $1,000 top prize in the annual DIRTcar Northeast Sportsman Series event over a star-laden field of open-wheel contenders.

“We’ve been coming here for many years and I finished second in this (series) race numerous times,” noted Comfort, now a seasoned veteran at age 58, after his fifth top-5 tour tally at the Ontario County Fairgrounds oval. “At my hometrack I could never get the series win and we finally got one!”

Also climbing highest on the podium in the final ‘Saturday Spectacular’ of the month at the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds were Alex Payne (Pepsi Big-Block Modified), Dan Craun (MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car), Mike Welch (Auto Value Parts Stores Street Stock), Blane Smith (Lloyd's Contracting Hobby Stock) and Chris Darling (Hutchinson Property Preservation New Legends Sportsman).

Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes was the beneficiary of the weekly 50/50 drawing while “Pink Night” at the fairgrounds honored the speedway’s Director of Marketing & Operations Tana Robinson. Every fan that wore pink received $2 off General Admission, with loyal fans contributing to area breast cancer research efforts. In addition, the Matt Sheppard and Peter Britten teams gave customers $5 off each pink item purchased from their line of apparel while all the money from every photo purchased from 5th Gear Photography at LOLR on Saturday was donated toward breast cancer research; contact Nicholas at 5thgearphotography22@gmail.com or 585-794-7358 to place future orders.

The cancer awareness program kicked off further west on Friday when Tana’s long-time ‘home’ track Ransomville Speedway hosted its own #TanaStrong Pink Out event. Followed up the next night in Canandaigua, fans, drivers, crew members and officials were encouraged to wear pink in support of their Hall of Fame GM as she continues her fight as well as all those who are affected by breast cancer.

While Buffalo’s Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Angel Fund received the gifts collected at Ransomville, the ‘Big R’ staff challenged other racing groups to match the participation. Among those joining the drive alongside Land of Legends were Brewerton Speedway, Fulton Speedway, The Dirt Track at Genesee, Lancaster Motorplex, Oswego Speedway, Weedsport Speedway, DIRTcar Northeast and its Super DIRTcar Series, Empire Street Stock Series, CRSA Sprints and Empire Super Sprints along with Merrittville Speedway and Ohsweken Speedway in the Canadian province of Ontario. During intermission on Friday, the drivers did a “Pass the Helmet” and $1,650 was collected for the donation to Roswell Park’s Angel Fund.

In a timely tribute Saturday as an all-star cast of Sportsman title contenders converged on the historic Canandaigua clay, former Mr. DIRT Sportsman Champion and current Land of Legends Race Director Greg Hixson was honored as the second addition to the Wall of Fame, joining Mike Button in Canandaigua's Class of '25. Not only were Button (1990) and Hixson (1991) crowned the first-ever overall Mr. DIRT Sportsman champs at the peak of their open-wheel careers, Hixson literally moved his love of the sport to new heights as he remains high atop in the tower guiding trackside activity every Saturday night at LOLR.

Admittedly a life-long racing addict since childhood attending races with his parents at tracks in Waterloo, Weedsport and Elbridge (Rolling Wheels Raceway) before becoming a fixture at Canandaigua, Hixson ultimately entered the Amateur Street Stock ranks at the Ontario County oval in 1978 steering a 6-cylinder ‘68 Chevrolet Biscayne numbered 19. Soonafter the Newark native purchased his own Chevy Chevelle and took on the trademark #1, later adding the ‘S’ after son Scott was born.

Hixson racked up 11 full-fender feature wins at the fairgrounds in the early 80s, teaming with Jim Almekinder in 1984 to field a Small-Block Modified at nearby Dundee. Finding a new class more affordable, he returned to Canandaigua to join the growing Sportsman brigade in the division’s second season as part of Glenn Donnelly’s DIRT circuit. Hixson wasted little time after his June 4, 1988 division debut, cracking the Canandaigua winner’s circle on July 16. Adding sponsorship support in ‘89 from Dick & Barb Sears of D&B Movers, Hixson later closed out his successful Sportsman career in ‘91 with the coveted Mr. DIRT crown, 2 tour wins among 11 on the season as well as Canandaigua and Rolling Wheels point titles.

Following a brief Big-Block Modified effort in 1992, “The Mover” shifted to the other side of the fence, taking on his first Race Director role at Gary Palone’s Paradise Speedway in Geneva where go-carts and motorcycles were just as popular as cars on Friday nights. Success snowballed from there as he added Chief Starter at Black Rock Speedway to his resume before turning over head flagger duties to 18 year-old son Scott in 2003. Up next came four years of service as a key safety official for Mike Emhof’s Patriot Sprint Group beginning in 2007, then the start of his career in the Canandaigua tower to open Jeremie Corcoran’s 2nd season of promotion in ‘12.

When Emhof took control of the CRSA 305 Series in 2016, Hixson assumed the position of Director of Operations, and when Paul Cole became promoter and renamed the track Land Of Legends Raceway in 2018, the title of Race Director was once again bestowed upon Hixson with son Scott climbing back up the stand to wave the flags full time. Greg held the same raceday responsibilities for one season (2020) at Freedom Raceway and in 2025 also fills the director’s chair at Ransomville Speedway for Friday shows before heading back east to Canandaigua. Wife Dawn has served as the VIP Suite hostess since ‘19 to make it a true family affair at LOLR.

Comfort’s racing career in Canandaigua has carried on a family tradition of its own for over four decades with his latest victory further solidifying his place in the LOLR recordbook. Besting a top-notch field of 38 teams signed in for the combination DIRTcar Central/Western Region tour stop, the 30-lap win was easily the biggest yet.

The series showdown attracted 13 of the top-15 point chasers in the Central Region and the top-5 travelers arriving from the West. Comfort was fourth quickest in the fourth and final group time trial session and finished second in his heat yet when he redrew pole-position among the top-2 finishers in each qualifier to begin the feature, runner-up laurels stared the remaining 31 starters right in the eye.

After a customary 4-wide pace lap primed the pack, sophomore Sportsman standout Nick Ventura had his own game plan once underway. Front row partner Ventura charged ahead of Comfort when the opening green flag unfurled yet once the #10 Steve General Contractor-Millco Woodworking-Comfort Epoxy Floors Bicknell entry dialed in on the fast half-miler there was no turning back.

Comfort forged the lone lead change on lap seven maneuvering low through turns three and four although he had to remain patient as eight yellow flags flew to stall the 43-minute main. On each restart Comfort stayed steady, first fending off Ventura, then weekly rival Matt Guererri and lastly 20th starting Gavin Eisele over the final five circuits.

“Took a minute for the tires to come in and then the car was on rails,” exclaimed Comfort, following his fifth tour triumph, the last logged at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in 2001. “With all those cautions you just keep talking to yourself, make sure you hit your marks. There’s gonna be another caution so don’t worry about it. Just keep hitting your marks.”

“Have to thank Eldon and Alex (Paynes) with Speed Connection. Alex works on this car relentlessly and he sets it up, he’s the man. He’s done this for me, it’s awesome,” added Comfort, the 1999 and 2000 LOLR Sportsman points champion now with 26 career open-wheel wins that rank him fifth all-time in Canandaigua.

A past Gerald Haers Memorial winner in 2023, Eisele settled for second after a sensational run from outside the tenth row, collecting a $100 ‘Hard Charger’ cash award from Lyons Engineering for advancing 18 positions. Canandaigua points leader Tyler Corcoran rallied from 12th to take third ahead of LOLR regulars Matt Guererri and Richard Murtaugh III. Mike Fowler, Ventura, Tim Baker, Frank Guererri Jr. and Evan Nugent rounded out the Top-10.

The three-race Western Region points chase came to a close with Ransomville’s Brett Senek (finished 17th) taking top honors (412 pts) followed by Dan Ferguson (384), Nigel Pendykoski (380), Ryan Barrett (380) and Cody McPherson (296), who was tied with Senek through two races yet elected to compete closer to home Saturday at Merrittvlle (Ont.) Speedway, where he won the feature event.

Fulton Speedway stages the fifth and final Central Region points race on July 26 with Eisele (580), Corcoran (566), Emmett Waldron (534), Murtaugh (526) and Hunter Hollenbeck (506) perched highest atop the point standings.

The series returns to the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds in Canandaigua as part of the 7th Annual Gerald Haers Memorial on Sept. 13 when LOLR hosts a DIRTcar Northeast Fall Championship event with top Sportsmen contending in a 40-lap feature race.

Unlike the 15-mile Sportsman marathon, only one caution period slowed the 30-lap Big-Block Modified finale yet the 12-minute main was still plenty of time for sixth-place starter Payne to secure a lead and outlast Mat Williamson to score his first win of the season.

“What a race track, hats off to the (track crew) and (promoter) Paul Cole, and congratulations to Greg (Hixson) on the Wall of Fame. Just can’t say enough about this place and what it means to me, been too long (since last win),” said Payne, 19, on the heels of his fifth career triumph at the fairgrounds.

Australian transplant Peter Britten rocketed from fourth to first on the opening circuit with Payne following suit to grab second with five laps down. Zach Payne spun around in turn four to incur the lone caution on lap six and the ensuing restart was just what young Alex needed to edge Britten across the line for the top spot.

From there the potent #70A Honeoye Auto Parts-Big Creek Concrete-Batzel's Automotive & Hot Rods-Bilstein Shocks-Speed Connection/Bicknell mount ran uncontested, finally reaching traffic with only a half-dozen laps to go. However, the battle for second was far more entertaining once Williamson got around Nick Root for third by the midway point.

Filing in 10th on the starting grid, Williamson finally swept high around Britten on lap 27 yet his late-race charge fell eight car-lengths shy under Scott Hixson’s checkered flag. In 10 events six-time winner ‘Money Mat’ is yet to finish outside the top-two. Justin Haers improved to fourth with Root posting a career-best fifth-place finish followed by Matt Sheppard and north country invader Tim Fuller.

“Not expecting (win) tonight,” Payne admitted. “We pulled this car back out, we’ve been saving it a little bit. Man, with a Billy The Kid (engine) under the hood, an unbelievable piece. Honeoye Auto Parts on the quarter panel and to put Doug (Dulen Jr, HAP owner) back in victory lane is just a special night. And my dad (Eldon) and Karl Comfort with a Sportsman series win using our stuff, Bilstein Shocks and Eibach Springs, what an awesome night.”

While the previous win for Payne came in July last season, its been three years since Craun last  parked his no. 18C Countywide Glass-Int'l Assoc. of Fire Fighters(IFF)-Pikeside AG Machinery-St Jude’s Mach1 winged machine in Canandaigua’s elusive DAV Victory lane.

“Great track, nice and smooth, just got lucky I guess,” downplayed Craun, 47, after the Livonia racer led all 20-laps to win by 15 car-lengths over race-long runner-up Cameron Moss. Craun pocketed the $100 Prouty’s Bar & Grill Bonus for ending five-time A-Main winner Bobby Parrow’s win streak at two straight.

“Kept waiting for (Parrow) to put a nose underneath me, didn’t know where he was. Kept trying to look at the leader (score) board but I couldn’t focus enough on that to see where the #80 was sitting,” added Craun, who did reach the winner’s circle last summer in a CRSA 305 Series show at Outlaw Speedway in Dundee.

Craun out-dragged front row partner Moss on lap one, briefly pulling away before Ethan Gray broke and slid off the track high in turn two to require caution. Parrow started seventh and lined up for the lap four restart. Yet that was as high as current track points leader Parrow could muster as he caught a rut and got airborne riding through turn one which forced him off the pace for the remainder to end his run of three successive Saturday night victories.

The final 17 circuits clicked off non-stop with Craun methodically maintaining his line lap after lap. Moss was just as steady on the way to a career-best second-place finish, keeping Lance Dusett at bay while John Smith crossed the line behind Parrow in the final box score result.

With plenty of pink to go around Saturday night at the fairgrounds, Welch put the #00 Orange Crush-Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling-TLC Trips-Auto Value Chevrolet in the winner’s circle for the second time this season to reach 90 trips to victory lane in his lengthy LOLR career.

“Just appreciate everybody being here in pink,” acknowledged Welch, 59, Tana’s companion for the past 15 years and fiance for nearly as many. “To honor Tana and show such great support of many other breast cancer survivors is bigger than any race win here. Can’t thank her enough for putting up with all my crap, spending a lot of hours working on the car all week while she recovers from treatment.”

Lined up outside front row, Welch was destined to take another victory as soon as the first green flag flew. Withstanding four cautions in the first eight laps, mission accomplished 20 minutes later when the checkers finally came to close out the 20-lap Street Stock feature.

Increasing his advantage to a dozen car-lengths at the wire, Welch left runner-up Marc Minutolo and Rick Crego to dice for position much of the way in his rear-view mirror. Points leader C.J. Guererri claimed fourth after a lap five, turn four tangle flattened his tire while fifth-place went to Pat Hobbs, the only other car to finish.

Two-thirds of the Hobby Stock field was around to witness the checkered flag yet another lengthy full-fender feature placed many top runners in survival mode throughout. Eighth starting Smith watched his counterparts drop back in the early stages, moving into third by lap three before waging a rugged battle for the lead with Nate Peckham by the midway mark.

Pole-sitter Craig Dingy led lap one before double-duty driver Minutolo and Justin Eldredge slowed to require caution as they picked up at the rear in time for the restart. Tyler Burnell took to the point when green lights reappeared yet gave way to Peckham when two more yellows forced slowdowns on lap three alone. Smith wasted no time moving in to challenge, swapping spots with Peckham twice until securing the lead for good on lap 10.

Eldredge stole second from Peckham in the closing stages yet fell two car-lengths back of the winning #55B Proctor Enterprises-Tradition Ford-Smith Drywall-iFreeze Storage & Distribution Center Chevrolet Monte Carlo at the line. Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell Jr. finished fourth ahead of son Tyler, tying Bubba with Marc Minutolo (7th) for the division points lead heading down the stretch.

“Feels really good, this field is stout with such good cars and good drivers,” stated Smith, who prior to last weekend earned his last Street Stock trophy in 2013 and was credited with five more Pure Stock victories when both classes were combined in 2016. His win count is now 38. “Things just fell into my place tonight.”

“There were a lot of cautions early, knew I was kinda screwing up there at the end and my brakes were kinda on the floor. I knew Justin (Eldredge) and the other birds were there, just tried to keep (car) on the bottom and make them go around me. The guys (behind) were kinda skating off the bottom and my car was really good right tight to the rail, my style of driving. Keep it down there, try not to spin the tires and it worked out. But tonight is all about pink, love you Tana,” added Smith, who unveiled a pink t-shirt under his driver’s suit during the post-race celebration trackside.

Racing against the 11:00pm curfew to bring down the curtain, Darling did not disappoint in the final event of the night. Mitchell Hyde led the opening lap but when Mark Sundt spun the next time around to incur caution, sixth starting Darling darted into first and remained untouchable the rest of the way steering the #714 Speed Connection-Van Bortel Trucking-Sunrise Insulation-Bilstein Shocks/Bicknell ride.

“It’s amazing, never had a season like this,” stated Darling, following his fifth 12-lap novice win of the ‘25 campaign, completing a three-race sweep for the Speed Connection contingent in Big-Block, Sportsman and Legends divisions. “Raced since I was five (yrs. old) in three different cars and just never had a season like this.”

“A little rough in (turns) one and two but I used that to my advantage. In three and four it was kinda the same thing. There was a big rut and that kinda set me up for the corner. Kept getting tight a little bit but it’s okay,” Darling reflected.

Kyle Ridley followed Darling through the same hole on the lap two restart and had to fend off a fierce charge by Lucas Newton in his season debut to secure second at the line. Belle Hogan started last (13th) and completed her stellar run in fourth with Tom Bayer rounding out the final front-five.
