Grant, Kerrick & Playford Score Full-Fender Wins In Land Of Legends Finale

Sobotka & Liechti capture open-wheel features in 2025 Canandaigua curtain-closer

Canandaigua, NY – September 27, 2025 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR

Paul Cole will certainly not be scolded for dropping the ‘F-Bomb’ on Land Of Legends Raceway as the eighth-year promoter provided motorsports fans in the Finger Lakes Region with his own ‘Fall Festival’ of speed in a big ‘Full Fender Frenzy’ to accentuate the 2025 season-finale.

Highlighting the final ‘Saturday Spectacular’ of the season, Jimmy Grant captured the lucrative 14th Les Whyte Top Gun Shootout for Auto Value Parts Stores Street Stocks, Danny Kerrick claimed the companion Lloyd's Contracting Hobby Stock ‘Hoedown’ in its fifth edition and Shane Playford celebrated a return of the DIRTcar Northeast Pro Stock Series to wine country with his first-ever victory lane appearance on tour.

Open-wheel action helped close out the 62nd year of auto racing at the Ontario County Fairgrounds oval with Zach Sobotka winning an A-Verdi Storage Containers CRSA 305 Sprint Car A-Main for the first time in Canandaigua and Justin Liechti taking home his second career trophy after the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman feature marked LOLR’s last weekend of action.

The storied Top Gun Shootout was also the sixth and final event in the Butler Excavation & Concrete Empire Street Stock Series powered by Justin Neff Landscaping and Grant pocketed $1,500 plus additional contingency awards after his flag-to-flag victory. All-time LOLR feature winner Mike Welch finished fourth in a strong 20-car field to secure the overall ESSS points title in the traveling tour’s third annual run.

With third-place feature finisher Marc Minutolo spearheading his “pack the purse” program that generated an extra $2,250 plus $710 in lap sponsorship and $750 in bonus awards, Kerrick collected the $750 top prize for his second win of ‘25 in the Lloyd's Contracting Hobby Stock ‘Hoedown’ headliner.

The MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car showdown also brought down the curtain on the DisBatch Brewing Company Challenge for three-race mini-series champion Bobby Parrow although it was Sobotka besting a season-high 36 teams to earn a well-deserved $1,000 payday. With Canandaigua’s CRSA event —along with Outlaw Speedway’s final stop on Oct. 18— offering ‘show up’ points to all entries, a 13th-place finish or better by current leader Sobotka at Weedsport Speedway tomorrow (Sun.-Sept. 28) will all but sew up the rookie’s first championship in the touring group’s 20th season of competition.

Along with feature winners recognized weekly throughout the season in DAV Victory Lane, Disabled American Veterans was the Beneficiary of the final 50/50 drawing on Saturday with proceeds collected throughout the evening distributed trackside during the customary post-race ceremonies.

The last show of the season was also highlighted by the fourth and final LOLR Wall of Fame induction ceremony with long-time speedway staff members Curt & Nancy Sheradin honored during a special pre-race tribute behind the main grandstand. The Sheradins joined still active Sportsman racer Mike Button, retired Sportsman driver and current LOLR Race Director Greg Hixson, and veteran Sprinter Chuck Hebing in the speedway’s Class of '25 on this special occasion.

Wearing many hats throughout his trackside tenure, Curt, alongside his wife Nancy for just as long, was ultimately recognized for his dedicated service to area racers with their big ‘red wrecker’ a speedway staple at the Canandaigua fairgrounds for nearly six decades. Older than DIRT yet with no feature wins or track titles to his credit, contributions to the local racing community have been just as significant in the role of tow truck operator for the past 55 years.

First offering assistance to second-generation Rolling Wheels Raceway owners Don and Bob Petrocci Jr. following the tragic passing of their father Bob Sr. in 1970, Curt first ventured to Canandaigua in the mid-70s to assist the late track promoter Dominic Tantalo at the historic Ontario Co. oval. With Paradise Speedway literally in the backyard of his Oaks Corners property, trackside titles there under promoter Gary Palone included head flagman, put steward and photographer while assuming weekly track prep duties along the way.

Beginning behind the wheel of a John DeWitt-backed tow truck, growing responsibilities at tracks in Weedsport and Dundee as well as the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse prompted Curt’s purchase of his own ‘86 Ford rig. Since then his speedway stature has only elevated on race night, especially each Saturday with Nancy buckled beside him in their customary turn four infield parking spot. Yet despite this endearing devotion, ‘I don’t want to see you tonight’ still remains the kindest remark they may hear from any driver before that first green flag even flies.

With a lucrative top prize payoff on the line in the popular Whyte title match, three-time LOLR points king Grant had his no. 36 Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating-J.E. Marine Maintenance Chevrolet Camaro dialed in all night, matching his TGOS victory scored in September of 2023. A missing gas cap prior to the feature race start was the only imperfection after the Penn Yan pilot won his qualifying heat then led the entire 20-mile main event in dominating fashion.

“Lucky we got the spot back after we lost the fuel cap,” stated Grant, who returned to his outside front row starting spot after a quick stop pitside to replace the missing piece. “The starting position definitely helped.”

The Street Stock event once more paid tribute to past LOLR Pro Stock champion driver Whyte, with Grant listed alongside inaugural winner Dave Schulz, Brian Michels, Jipp Ortiz, Josh Pangrazio and Carl Johnson as past champions since the event was launched in 1999. Grant’s latest triumph was also his third in four Empire Street Stock Series shows staged at the fairgrounds.

Grant out-dragged pole-sitter Rick Crego under chief starter Scott Hixson’s initial green flag with Welch moving into second followed by recently crowned track champion C.J. Guererri after five laps. The ‘Wild Willy Special’ opened up a comfortable advantage halfway through with only the lone caution incurred on lap 26 for the slowing mount of Donald Almekinder to keep the field in touch.

Yet back under green there was no denying the veteran driver as he assumed complete control with a clear track ahead. At the wire it was Grant authoring nearly a half-track margin of victory with runner-up Marc Minutolo collecting $150 from Debbie Everdyke, the former wife of Les Whyte, after improving from 10th to earn the customary Hard Charger Award. Charging from 25th to fifth in the Pro Stock debut on the Syracuse Mile during Super DIRT Week in 1997 to earn Les 'Hard Charger' honors inspired Debbie to keep his memory alive by sponsoring this special award.

Crego settled for third followed by Welch and Guererri with 10th-place finisher Bobby Lippa Jr. the last to complete the entire 40-lap distance.

“We could put the car anywhere,” remarked Grant, after his fifth win in seven starts this season to vault his career Street Stock total to 34 (3rd all-time) in Canandaigua. “And we had more if we needed it. Could bang it on the top if needed, car was good and smooth all night.”

En route to his first Empire Street Stock Series title run, Welch won extra-distance features at Genesee and Ransomville speedways. Josh Pangrazio copped the heldover 2024 series show at LOLR run during Ontario County Fair Week ‘25 in July. Shane Wolf Jr. from Susquehanna PA captured the first two ESSS crowns with Welch placing fourth in the inaugural 2023 points chase and third last season.

Like his full-fender friend Grant before him, time away from the fairgrounds in ‘25 did little to put a dent in Kerrick’s superiority up front as he led all but one time around in the 25-lap Hobby feature aboard his potent #61 Fratto Curbing-Midlakes Welding & Fabrication-J.E. Marine Chevrolet Camaro.

Pole-winner Kerrick lost the top spot to front row partner Willy Easling when the first green flag unfurled yet following a multi-car turn four tangle that forced a complete restart, the Gorham driver regained the point on lap two and hardly looked back.

“I got by Willy, think he just jumped the cushion or something,” figured Kerrick, scoring his second win in just three starts with his eight career Canandaigua victories logged the last three seasons. “It was gonna be hard to pass him because I knew he was gonna stay on the top and wasn’t gonna come off it so I had to figure out a different way to pass him. I just kinda got lucky with him pushing off and I was able to get underneath him.”

Despite a handful of cautions hindering a top-flight performance up front, Kerrick never flinched as his closest competition fell back one by one. Top-five runners Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell Jr. and Justin Eldredge shared ‘Hard Luck’ awards, with runner-up Burnell looping his mount with just one lap to go and Eldredge rallying to the front twice before following Burnell into the pits, each with 23 laps scored. Easling gave up third on lap 11, suffering a flat rear tire at the same time Eldredge brought out a yellow for his own blown tire, with Willy charging back to finish fifth.

At the stripe it was Kerrick regaining a comfortable five car-length margin followed by 14th-place starter Nate Peckham and double-duty drivers Minutolo and Grant. Posting 1st - 2nd - 3rd - 4th-place finishes in his four previous starts, 2022 ‘Hoedown’ champ Tyler Burnell hung on for eighth with Justin Jacobly (13th) the last of the 27 starters to finish all 25 laps.

Following Canandaigua’s 17-year absence from DIRTcar Northeast’s premier Pro Stock Series, 17 teams signed in for the seventh points-paying race in the ‘25 edition. It marked just the second event this season for Playford yet his home-built white no. 6 Hatrik Custom Embroidery-MRP Companies-Playfab mount appeared just as poised among the regular tour travelers.

“I’ve never even seen this place but the track was beautiful and racing with my best friend was amazing,” beamed Playford, who was “in school letting his girlfriend do his homework 17 years ago,” after outlasting Luke Horning in a car he also designed. “He made a mistake coming out of (turn) two and I was able to get back up in front of him. Wow, what a good time, we won on the DIRT Series!”

Horning took the opening lap lead from pole-sitting pal Playford and the pair pulled away from early chasers Chris Stalker and Rich Crane on the ultra-smooth half-miler. When series follower Devon Camenga slowed out of turn one to incur the lone caution on lap eight, Playford was in prime position to duck under for the lead as the Gloversville gladiators crossed the line only a bumper apart.

Playford built up a big lead at the halfway point of the 30-lap affair yet when the leaders reached traffic on lap 24 the gap tightened dramatically. Rim-riding the high side lap after lap in the closing stages, Horning crept to within two car-lengths as the checkered flag waved, giving the Utica-Rome Speedway stalwarts the top-two spots in the Series return to wine country.

“Luke is so good at adjusting his line and knowing what he needs to do,” said Playford, after emerging as the eighth Pro Stock winner in 14 events at LOLR since the Series 1995 debut. Don Carlson won the last race in 2008, with Pete Stefanski (5th), Jocelyn Roy (8th) and Denis Gauvreau (9th) coming back 17 years later. In Saturday’s showdown, Roy placed 6th, Stefanski 7th and Gauvreau 11th.

Five-time Series champion and 28-time tour winner Stefanski still extended his current lead with the veteran from Wheatfield NY pulling into the pits holding a 22-point advantage over Marc Lalonde and Tyler Bushey before leaving the fairgrounds leading Bushey by two more markers, 962-938; Lalonde (934) now sits third followed closely by Roy (932). Stefanski is also the all-time DIRTcar Pro Stock win leader with 104 checkered flags, recently surpassing the previous mark held by Canadian standout Joey Ladouceur.

“Like (Luke) lost the lead and he knows why he lost it and he’s very good at correcting that. I was just trying to get ahead of him as fast as I could and we did it,” added Playford, after becoming the 41st Pro Stock winner in 230 events run at LOLR since 1994 and pocketing the $1,000 top prize for his success.

A special Pro Stock vs. Street Stock Dash-for-Cash was also held that included the top-3 series point-getters and top-3 LOLR point leaders with Guererri collecting $200 in the 4-lap exhibition. From 1999 through 2004 the Top Gun One event was part of the NE Pro Stock Championship Series before Street Stocks moved to the forefront.

The next Pro Stock Series show is slated for Friday, Oct. 3 at Fulton Speedway as part of the 39th Annual Neivel Precision Plumbing Outlaw 200 Weekend, Oct.  2-4.

Surpassing car counts totals of 29 and 31 in the first two events, the third and final CRSA appearance of the season at the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds was just as historic. Especially for three-time LOLR Sportsman points champ turned wingman Sobotka steering his #38 Stirling Lubricants-Maxima Racing Oils-O.L.T. Logging/XXX sprinter.

“This is the track that I really wanted to get a win at in the 305s,” remarked Sobotka, who joins Charlie Donk, Dan Wiesner, Darryl Ruggles, Gary Tomkins, Scott Schrader, Steve Schultz, Ted Bauer and Vince Vitale as the only drivers that have won in at least three different divisions during their career on the clay in Canandaigua. “It’s a special place to win at. We’ve done it in a Big-Block and Sportsman, to get it in one of these it’s probably the most special we’ve got one at.”

Heading into the final full-points event Sunday in Weedsport, Sobotka remains the current points leader followed by season-long foe Dillon Paddock. Amidst his record-setting campaign that includes 17 front-five finishes in his 18 events, Sobotka (2598) leads Dillon Paddock (2569) by 29 markers followed by Jordan Hutton (2445), Dalton Herrick (2385) and Scott Landers (2376) through 19 total events with Outlaw Speedway hosting the final show in mid-October.

The 19th CRSA series race of the season aligned a 26-car starting field for the 25-lap A-Main, which also stood as the third and final round of the ‘25 DisBatch Brewing Company Challenge.

While 17 drivers were eligible to win the three-race DisBatch Brewing mini-series, opening round race winners Jeff Trombley and Parrow were the front-runners heading into the weekend event that also offered show-up points toward the overall CRSA Championship. Parrow led Trombley by seven points while ‘25 LOLR points runner-up Lance Dusett trailed by nine. Recently crowned Canandaigua points king Parrow needed a third-place finish or better to clinch while a fifth or worse for Parrow would have afforded Dusett a shot at the title.

In the final run-down fifth-place A-Main finisher Parrow (497 pts) edged Trombley (finished 4th) and winner Sobotka, each with 492 points, while Dusett (488) and Paddock (476) completed the top-five.

Sobotka remained patient on Saturday, with the Parish racer chasing pole-winner Ethan Gray for more than half the race before using traffic to his advantage rounding turn four to forge the lone lead change on lap 15 and cruise home for a commanding 10 car-length victory in the caution-free feature.

“I’ve got a lot of laps around this place so I sorta thought (Gray) was gonna go from the middle to the bottom (lane),” divulged Sobotka, after notching his CRSA-best fifth win of the season which also earned him a right-rear Hoosier thanks to VanBortel Trucking and Ike VanBortel who also gave tires earlier this season to LOLR winners Trombley and Parrow.

“There were lapped cars all over the place so it was tough to really know but I had a feeling he was gonna go to the bottom and I was gonna be able to get around him on top. Was just able to hang with him. He had a fast car out front but it ended up playing out in our favor,” added Sobotka, who also has 12 Sportsman wins at LOLR.

Gray settled for a Series-best runner-up finish followed by eighth-place starter and past LOLR points champ Jordan Hutton, then all-time CRSA A-Main winner Trombley and two-time Canandaigua high-point man Parrow.

A solid field of 28 DIRTcar Sportsman entries signed up for the track finale with Liechti pocketing a cool $1G for his latest run to the checkers, this one coming in a paint-trading exhibition against Fulton invader Hunter Hollenbeck.

“(Hollenbeck) seemed to jump (restart) a little bit but I guess I had to step it up a little bit off the (next) start,” smiled Liechti, who survived lap 12 contact with a lapped car, then loss of the lead to Hollenbeck on a lap 14 restart before returning to the point on another lap 19 restart amidst more contact up front sailing through turn one.

Liechti out-dueled pole-sitter Hollenbeck to kick off the 25-lap feature with Cameron Tuttle, Evan Nugent and Tyler Guzzardi exchanging spots close behind. When Tyler Foster slid off the track in turn four to force out the first yellow flag on lap 14, Hollenbeck pulled off a slide job through turns one and two to grab the lead once the green lights reappeared.

Division rookie Chase Spoor dropped off the pace to require a second caution period on lap 19, one that allowed Liechti to regroup and rebound on the ensuing restart with a half-dozen laps still to go. When the smoke cleared after the front-runners scrambled for position in the first corner, Liechti emerged the new leader while Hollenbeck was drop-kicked to fourth behind Nugent and Guzzardi.

From there the no. 21J Batzel's Automotive-Olmstead Machine & Fabrication-Schram Trucking/Bicknell ride ran uncontested with Liechti beating Nugent by four car-lengths under the double checkered flags. Tuttle placed third ahead of recently crowned Canandaigua points champ Karl Comfort and Guzzardi while Hollenbeck was relegated to sixth after his valiant effort.

“Struggled to make it happen and put things together this season,” noted Liechti, a New Legends Sportsman graduate who scored his first win on June 14 in the upper ranks. “Got lucky enough to get one win earlier this year. A lot of other times I should’ve gotten the win but didn’t. It’s just been a great year.”
