2025 LOLR Track Point Champs Crowned

Williamson, Comfort, Parrow, Guererri & Burnell Take 2025 Canandaigua Track Titles

Final regular season feature wins to Haers, Lafler, Dusett, Guererri, Burnell & Ridley

Canandaigua, NY – August 30, 2025 – Steven Ovens, Land of Legends Raceway PR

Tensions were high in the Land of Legends Raceway pit area Saturday for the track’s annual Championship Night presented by Prouty’s Bar. Phelps, NY chauffeur “T-Bone” Justin Haers claimed the lead early to snap a three-year winless drought in the Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds. Mat Williamson made his back-to-back championship effort official with a runner-up effort.

Tim Lafler made it two-straight seasons of winning on Championship Night in the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman, while Karl Comfort secured his third division title and first in 25 years. Lance Dusett took down his first MighTea Boba 305 Sprints victory of the year as Bobby Parrow had the division crown secured coming into the night. Full fender stars CJ Guererri (Auto Value Street Stocks) and Frank “Bubba” Burnell Jr. (Lloyd’s Contracting Hobby Stocks) both put the exclamation point on their championship runs with division victories. Kyle Ridley capped off his second-year and final planned Hutchinson Property Preservation New Legends Sportsman start with a win.

Honor Veterans was in attendance as the evening’s 50/50 beneficiary with several volunteers on hand. Opening ceremonies were kicked off with a moment of silence for former on-track competitor Todd Stanton and former car owner and friend to racing Jeff Brownell, who were both lost during the past week.

“T-Bone” got off to a quick start in his Phelps Cement Products Bicknell on Saturday night, starting the event from the outside of row three and quickly surpassing Kasey Coffey, Nick Root and James Sweeting in the opening two circuits. Justin Wright could only hold back the three-time Land of Legends champion for a lap as Haers assumed the lead for good on lap 4.

While Haers set a torrid pace out front, racing to a 3.7 second lead, Canandaigua’s own Alex Payne picked his way to the runner-up position by lap 8. “Batman” Peter Britten, Root and Matt Sheppard spent the majority of the event swapping positions in and outside the Top 5- allowing ‘25 champion Williamson to close in.

As the race eclipsed the halfway point, the “Slidejob Express” had trimmed Haers’ lead down to less than a second. Payne would inch closer and closer to his fellow Honeoye Auto Parts sponsor teammate until the first yellow flag of the event felll on lap 20. Coffey spun off of Turn 4 and made a trip out to the Meyers RV Campground, slowing the field and setting up a thrilling restart.

Payne kept pace with Haers on the ensuing restart and attempted a low lane to high lane slider into turn 3, not once but twice in successive laps but to no avail as Haers had the right stuff off the money corner. Just two laps later, Britten would see a left rear Hoosier tire lose air pressure to bring out the Wicked Tees caution on lap 22.

Haers took advantage on the ensuing restart, pulling away to a three-car lead over Payne who now had to deal with the likes of ninth-place starting Williamson. ‘Money Mat’ dispatched of Payne as chief starter Scott Hixson waved five digits to the field.

Williamson got as close as a car length back but the FLX Home Solutions No. 3 was not to be denied on this night. Haers streaked across the line first, erasing a winless drought that went back to August 13, 2022.

“I tried to get out front early and set a pace, knowing that if the yellows came the dogs would all be coming,” noted Haers in DAV Victory Lane. “(Payne) got to us and threw a few sliders at us. The car started overheating so I just decided to put this (thing) to the floor and let her eat.”

Haers was reflective of the three years it took to get back to Victory Lane and the slow lap along the frontstretch wall to salute the LOLR fan contingent.

“These wins are hard to get. Every one you get you’ve got to cherish them. We’ve cut back and race but maybe 15 to 16 times a year. When you get one of these wins you have to appreciate it, especially with the field of cars we have here.”

While celebrating the win, Haers was laser-focused on the Gerald Haers Memorial in just two weeks time; a race in its seventh running, honoring his late father.

“I’m pumped up and ready to go to my dad’s race. I want that win,” said Haers with a slight voice quiver- highlighting the emotions of the upcoming 100-lapper.

A cheerful Williamson came into the night with no pressure and spoke to the incredible record they’ve had at LOLR, posting an average finish of 1.71.

“We’ve had a really good year here with one fifth and the rest of the finishes being first or second,” noted the St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada native.

Land of Legends Raceway TV pit reporter Adam DelGrosso pulled no punches in questioning if Williamson will try to defend the title and seek a three-peat.

“I think so, we’re setting our program up pretty well right now. We went out and got another C.C. Performance motor like this one that runs great.”

The race of the night without a doubt was the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman 25-lap main event. Four drivers entered the night with a chance at claiming the title with Tyler Corcoran leading Karl Comfort (-3), Matt Guererri (-10) and Richard Murtaugh (-11). Following the heat races that also pay championship points, Corcoran held a slim four-point margin over Comfort and 11 over Guererri and Murtaugh.

Rookie sensation “The Wildman” Chris Darling and Tim Lafler brought the 19-car field to green, with the New Legends Sportsman graduate (5 wins) leading the opening three laps. A lap 3 caution would strike disaster for Corcoran as a right rear suspension component let loose causing Corcoran to go pitside for repairs. The Central Square, NY driver caught a huge break as J.T. Sperring simultaneously broke, requiring the tow truck and giving Corcoran extra laps under yellow to finish repairs on the Power Seal No. 64.

Once back under green, Darling led one more lap but the veteran Lafler was just getting the topside tuned up to his liking. Lafler secured the lead officially on lap 5- a lead he would not relinquish the remainder of the event. In fact, Lafler and Darling gapped the rest of the field over the final 22-lap green flag run and missed the point battle behind them.

Sixth-place starting Comfort saw the issue for Corcoran and knew an opportunity existed to take hold of the championship. Ninth and tenth-place starting Guererri and Murtaugh had work to do as they not only stood to gain on Corcoran, they also needed to find a way by Comfort to have a chance.

Guererri was able to chip away at it, passing Comfort late in the going. Murtaugh, however, didn’t seem to have the race-winning speed he rode to a victory in the penultimate points event on August 23, finishing eighth.

As Comfort battled within the Top 5, Corcoran drove an inspired race trying to salvage as many positions as he could in search of Comfort. Corcoran went three-wide on two occasions and hustled his Dirt Track Digest TV Bicknell, passing cars high and low and building support in the main grandstand area while doing it.

As the laps wound down, Guererri got as far as third-place. Comfort lost third to Guererri and then lost fourth to Justin Liechti. With the championship falling through his grasp, Comfort found a little more out of the Steve General Contracting, Comfort Epoxy Floors mount and reclaimed the fourth position before the checkered flag fell.

Corcoran drag-raced Evan Nugent to the line in a battle for sixth place, with Nugent beating him by a bumper. Comfort finishing fourth and Corcoran finishing seventh swung the points by six markers, securing the title for the veteran Comfort by just two points. Post-race calculations showed that even if Corcoran had gotten by Nugent, the tie would have sent the pair to a tiebreaker of wins, which still would have given the nod to Comfort- 2 wins to 1.

Lafler sliced through slower traffic and navigated his way to his second career LOLR win just 364 days following his first win on Championship Night 2024.

“What a coincidence,” smiled Lafler, visibly excited about topping one of the most competitive weekly fields in the state.

Lafler was complimentary of the 13-year old who moved up to Sportsman just a few weeks back. “(Darling) is a good little racer that guy.”

For Comfort, a tension-filled week finally was able to hit the pressure relief valve and celebrate. A celebration some 25 years in the making.

“This means everything, if you can win and do well here you can go anywhere and win,” said Comfort.

A turning point in the race for Comfort after seeing Corcoran break was watching the 12G of Guererri go past.

“Matt came up there to pass me and I told myself you have got to go. I cannot let a car get between us. Just mash it!”

There was much less drama in the MighTea Boba 305 Sprints as ESS Hall of Famer Bobby Parrow had secured the division title following racing on August 23. The Waterloo, NY native could go for the win but it was yet another veteran who would claim victory on this night.

The race was slowed to a stop for a red flag on lap 13 when contact sent Dan Bennett careening into the implement tires protecting the end of the turn 1 guardrail. Bennett would take his time climbing from the black Bennett Heating and Cooling ‘X’ machine and walk away.

Dusett started from the outside of the front row when the field came to the initial green flag, lined up alongside Dan Craun. Craun took command early with Randy Years grabbing the runner-up spot from Dusett in the opening laps. Years took away the lead from Craun for a short time until lap 4 when the back end of his Randy’s Racing Filters No. 2 spun out in turn 2 while pacing the field out front.

On the ensuing restart Dusett rim-rode the topside to capture the lead from Craun as the field completed lap 5. From there Dusett raced his way to DAV Victory Lane for the second time in his career in a sprint car- following his first on July 13, 2024.

“The car was really, really good tonight,” said a relieved Dusett who admitted he wasn’t sure if a win was going to come in ‘25. “I have to thank Frank for all the work he does on the car and Tony Tripodi for everything he does.”

For Parrow, celebrating a championship was kind of a tale of two seasons.

“It’s been a pretty good year but we’re not sure, these last few weeks we just haven’t been able to find the handle to get up front.”

Parrow is focused on defending again in 2026.

“We will definitely be back next year. I’m not sure how much longer we’re going to continue doing this but we’ll be back next year for sure.”

CJ Guererri came into Championship Night at the Land of Legends focused on winning the Auto Value Street Stocks title for his dad David Sr. What better way to do that? Win the race and the championship.

Guererri entered the final points night with a 16-point advantage over Rick Crego which seemed fairly comfortable so long as Guererri didn’t suffer any mechanical setbacks. An average car count of nine to ten cars meant that the title wasn’t a lock and would require more than just taking the initial green flag.

Guererri started the race from position number four with Crego slated to start fifth. Once the green flag waved for the 20-lap main event, Guererri did not take it easy and immediately went to work. The Geneva, NY shoe passed Welch into turn one then went by Marc Minutolo and Patrick Hobbs to claim the lead on lap two.

While Guererri paced the field out front and out of reach, Crego and Minutolo went to work putting on a show for the fans in attendance and those viewing online on LOLR TV and DIRTVision that was worth the price of admission. Crego has long been a catfish, finding his groove on the bottom lane of the Ontario County half-mile. On this night though, Crego needed to switch it up and test the waters in the middle groove to challenge “Mr. Smooth.”

Guererri claimed his first Land of Legends track championship with a convincing victory. The war between Minutolo and Crego was settled with Minutolo winning the race for second with a last lap move. Crego, Welch and Southern Tier competitor Joe Giardina completed the Top 5.

“This means everything. My dad has been extremely sick, we don’t know where it’s all going but this one is for him,” noted an emotional Guererri after embracing his father next to the car.

The former Empire 100 winner also dedicated the win to the former owner of his car Rick Gulvin, who was lost earlier this year.

“This one is for Rick too, he was a huge supporter of ours and to be able to do this with this car is great.”

David Guererri Sr. was emotional in his own right, watching his son’s success and reflecting on the efforts of the entire team and family. “This means a lot to me, we’ve been waiting a long time for this. I’m very proud of all of them.”

The Lloyd’s Contracting Hobby Stocks would also see the race winner double as the division track champion as Frank “Bubba” Burnell Jr. would claim his fifth win of 2025. Burnell swept the night by winning an incredible eleventh qualifying heat race earlier in the night.

The lead for Burnell over Minutolo in the championship was 16 points, which was comfortable but not insurmountable in a division averaging over 15 cars per night. Burnell needed a seventh-place finish or better to lock things up, however conservative isn’t how you would describe the Waterloo, NY driver’s race. The former Hobby Stock champion in his F’N’A’s Rhythm & Booze No. 57B made three and four-wide moves to race into the Top-5 by lap 3.

Last week’s feature winner Jared Hill battled Blane Smith for the lead, claiming the top spot on lap 5 of 15. A lap 6 restart saw Burnell take third from Smith and close in on the battle for the lead as Nate Peckham took the lead from Hill on lap 7. Burnell also got by Hill to take second place and then took the lead for good on lap 13 with just two to go.

Burnell drove on to the win and secured his third overall track championship at the Land of Legends.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and when you check up and race conservative that’s where I get into trouble,” said Burnell with a laugh.

“I didn’t think I was as good as I was, I don’t know if they fell off and I got better. It’s amazing to be able to come to Canandaigua Speedway, win races and win a championship. This is where you want to win in New York State.”

The final feature was an addition to the Championship Night schedule as the Hutchinson Property Preservation New Legends Sportsman ran their finale on this evening. Eleven cars turned out with last week’s winner Shaun Toland and Mitchell Hyde bringing the field to “The Rooster”’s green flag. The opening lap saw sixth-place starting Ridley make a heroic move to advance to third in turns one and two.

Ridley would save his most exciting moves for the next set of corners as the young driver out of Waterloo dusted off the outside lane in three and four. A three-wide move and some white knuckle clenching by his parents watching pitside would see Ridley complete the sixth-to-first move to lead lap 1.

He sped on to lead every lap enroute to his fifth victory of the year and turn attention toward moving up to the full-fledged Sportsman division in 2026.

“I knew I had to get ahead fast and get out into clean air as the track slicked off,” said Ridley.

Ridley led Hyde, Brianna Murtaugh, Tom Bayer and AJ Mitchell across the line in the Top-5.

LEGEND LEDGER

A whopping $10,000 top prize is at stake for the Pepsi Big-Block Modified feature race winner with the 100-lap headliner boasting $1,000 just to start along with another $10,000 in both lap money and bonus awards. A Northeast Fall Championship Series event for Stirling Lubricants Sportsman completes the big DIRTcar doubleheader with the 40-lap feature winner pocketing $2,000 plus thousands more in cash and contingencies shared among all qualifiers. Williamson (Mod) and Murtaugh (Spt) shared last year’s first-place fortune.

Following another weekend off in Canandaigua, action returns to LOLR for the ‘25 curtain-closer on Sat. Sept. 27. The 14th Les Whyte Top Gun Shootout headlines the ‘Saturday Spectacular’ with Empire Street Stock Series point chasers contending in a 40-lap feature event. CRSA 305 Sprint Tour wingmen join the evening program looking to qualify for their own 25-lap A-Main, with a DIRTcar Pro Stock Series stop, 20-lap $750-to-win Hobby Stock feature plus a Sportsman Special filling out the five-star show that includes Legends Inductee Night #4.

With the Street Stock event held in tribute to the late LOLR Pro Stock champion and driver of the sleek Top Gun #1 machine, Jimmy Grant won the ‘24 edition that was run this past July after rain postponed the race scheduled last autumn. Western New Yorker Dave Schulz captured the inaugural TGO title race in 1999.
